Definitely not. Dancers often switch partners between dance. Experienced dancers often partner less experienced dancers to help them through the dance. Most Scottish Country Dances need at least six people to dance together. Its a great way to meet new friends.
No. Just wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Remember Scottish Country Dancing is quite energetic so you may get hot.
Wear any comfortable shoes with a soft non-slip sole.
If you have dancing shoes designed specifically for Scottish Country Dancing, soft leather pumps or ghillies please wear them but they are not essential for beginners.
No.. Everyone is welcome. Previous dancing experience like ballroom, ballet, or folk dancing etc may mean you pick things up more quickly, but you definitely do not need any prior experience.
Scottish country dances are divided into reels, jigs, and strathspeys according to the type of music they are danced to.
Reels and jigs have fast tempos, quick movements and a lively feel. Strathspeys have a much slower tempo and a more elegant style.
We will learn the basic steps and formations for each dance as we go and we are happy to help you through the dances.
Whether it is your first time or you are a seasoned veteran, you are welcome to join us. It's all about fun!
Scottish Country Dancing is great physical and mental exercise. If you are new to dancing please be aware of your own health and fitness levels and dance accordingly. The more you dance the fitter you will become.
Scottish Country Dancing is energetic and we encourage warming up before class and stretching afterwards.
All classes will begin with warm up exercises.
Everyone is welcome. The music is infectious. Highland regiments took Scottish Country Dance with them all around the world, and today Scottish Country Dancing thrives wherever people love to dance.
Music is an essential part of Scottish country dancing. It provides the rhythm for the dancers and is also just great to dance to! There are three main rhythm types - Reel, Jig and Strathspey, although it is not uncommon to find a Waltz or a March thrown in.
At class we will be dancing to music from recordings provided by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.
Dancing is very good for your heart and lungs and may also improve your balance and bone density. Dancing is also good for your mental health. Studies have shown that dance can help prevent dementia, improve cognitive skills and reduce depression and isolation.
